Welcome To The Analytical Instrumentation Lab

In this lab you will have the opportunity to work directly, under supervision, with the instrumentation used in analytical labs: UV/Vis and FTIR spectrophotometers, fluorometers, Liquid Chromatographs (LCs), Gas Chromatographs (GCs) and Ion Chromatographs (ICs). Within this environment you will be expected to operate independently, with faculty avaialable to answer questions, to analyze commercial and provided samples for identity and/or quantitation. You will be graded on your ability to accurately determine the contents of these samples within a certain percentage.

What makes this lab so unique?

Extensive! Within A240 we have a wide variety of equipment that you will be using. The equipment in this lab is used routinely in analytical labs in a wide variety of industries, in government, and in academic labs. These instruments are not proof of concept instruments to give you a flavour of what you will see. This equipment is what you will see when you leave the college and enter your careers.

Real World! The experiments that you will perform mirror those found in industry. These are not theoretical exercises; the tasks you will complete are based upon experiments industry and government labs complete routinely before products are released for sale and to determine if the environments are safe. You will be graded on your ability to record information accurately and on the accuracy of your results - how close are you are to the known value. These skills are essential for the analytical chemist to ensure the validity and utility of the resutls.

Knowledgable The faculty supporting A240 have experience with the equipment and can support you in your experiments and discuss real world uses of the instrumentation in our lab.

The Students are the Analysts

As the student, you are expected to work indepedently to complete the analyses requested and are to condust themselves as if you are working in an industrial analytical laboratory. You will be graded on your behaviour, your submissions, and your results. Your prior experience will support you in completing this work as you will be expected to apply the knowledge gained in Analytical Techniques, Chemistry 1 and 2, Analytical Chemsitry 1 and 2, and Organic Chemistry.
